Abstract

A battery module includes a plurality of battery cells, an upper cover covering the plurality of battery cells and a fire extinguishing unit arranged between the upper cover and the plurality of battery cells. The fire extinguishing unit includes a first case and a second case, which is combined with the first case and accommodates a fire extinguishing medium together with the first case. The first case includes a plurality of openings penetrating the first case in a thickness direction of the first case and a cover part positioned within each of the plurality of openings to block each of the plurality of openings. A coating layer is positioned on a bottom surface of the first case, covers the plurality of openings, and includes an ignition agent, an oxidizing agent, and a resin.
