Confinement assembly ground plane for radio frequency (rf) field control

A quantum computer comprising:

• a plurality of voltage sources configured to generate respective voltage signals, wherein the plurality of voltage sources comprises at least one radio frequency (RF) voltage source configured to generate an RF voltage signal;
• and
• a confinement assembly configured to confine a plurality of atomic objects, the confinement assembly comprising:
• an electrode layer comprising a plurality of electrodes, the plurality of electrodes comprising at least one RF electrode and operable to generate a confinement potential configured to confine the plurality of atomic objects;
• one or more electrical routing layers configured to provide the respective voltage signals to respective electrodes of the plurality of electrodes, the respective voltage signals comprising the RF voltage signal configured to be provided to the at least one RF electrode;
• and
• one or more metal layers defining a ground plane comprising a set of features in electrical communication with one another and with at least one RF electrode and configured to guide a return RF current to ground, the return RF current generated responsive to the RF voltage signal being provided to the at least one RF electrode.
