The present disclosure relates to methods, systems, and non-transitory computer-readable media for providing a user account with personalized guidance along a genealogical-research journey to achieve a genealogical-research target (or goal). For instance, the disclosed systems can leverage user-account data to determine a genealogical-research target and can generate and/or adaptively augment a genealogical-research journey to achieve the target. In some embodiments, the genealogical-research journey includes guidance in the form of a set of discrete functions and a journey-progress indicator that defines which discrete functions are (or have been) executed along the genealogical-research journey. Based on the journey-progress indicator and from among the set of discrete functions, the disclosed systems can determine an advancing function that, upon execution, progresses the genealogical-research journey further toward the genealogical-research target. In some cases, the disclosed systems provide a notification of the advancing function for display on a client device associated with the user account.
