Approaches in accordance with various illustrative embodiments provide for the upgrading of a software stack that controls network traffic for a tenant virtual machine (VM) in a datacenter. A software defined networking (SDN) stack can be deployed as a VM owned by a cloud solution provider (CSP). When an upgrade to the software stack is to be performed, a new VM can be deployed in the CSP environment that is identical to the current control VM but will include the upgraded software stack including the appropriate operating system (OS) kernel. The new VM software stack can then be activated, enabling the upgraded software stack to be available to manage the traffic of the tenant VM with almost no downtime. The new VM can take over the control plane and manage network traffic for the tenant VM.
A system, comprising:
At least one processor comprising processing circuitry to update software used to route network traffic for a tenant VM using an instance of routing hardware by, in part, generating a new VM similar to a current VM except for inclusion of updated software, the processing circuitry further to cause the new VM to take over, from the current VM, control plane responsibility for the network traffic of the tenant VM to be routed using the instance of routing hardware.
A software version manager for a datacenter, comprising:
At least one processor comprising processing circuitry to update software used to route network traffic for a tenant VM using an instance of routing hardware by, in part, generating a new controller similar to a current controller except for inclusion of updated software, the processing circuitry further to cause the new controller to take over, from the current controller, control plane responsibility for the network traffic of the tenant controller to be routed using the instance of routing hardware, wherein the current controller and the new controller comprise control plane containers or Kubernetes Pods.
