Disclosed is a hybrid optical device comprising a first component including a homogeneous region of dielectric property, and a second component including a heterogeneous region of dielectric property. As an example, a homogeneous-index optical element is integrated with a gradient indexed property device in which optical functions of the device are complementary. In at least some examples, a nanocomposite gradient index optical element is fabricated directly onto an optical element to provide the degrees of freedom appropriate to provide complementary optical power, or to reduce or correct for aberrations of a homogeneous region of dielectric property of the optical element.
