Abstract
A packing assembly to be disposed within a stuffing box defined by a fluid end of a body of a reciprocating plunger pump includes an elastomeric component and a wear component. The elastomeric component has an at least partially tapered inner diameter and an outer diameter and, in use, engages the stuffing box on the outer diameter and is axially compressed within the stuffing box. The wear component sealably engaging the elastomeric component across the at least partially tapered inner diameter and dynamically contacts the plunger to form a dynamic seal.
Claims25
A packing assembly to be disposed within a stuffing box defined by a fluid end of a body of a reciprocating plunger pump, comprising:
- a non-fluid elastomeric component defining an upstream end of the packing assembly and having an at least partially tapered inner diameter and an outer diameter, and, in use, engages the stuffing box on the outer diameter and is axially compressed within the stuffing box;
- and
- a non-fluid wear component positioned downstream of the elastomeric component and having an outer diameter sealably engaging the at least partially tapered inner diameter of the elastomeric component and an inner diameter, in use, dynamically contacting the plunger to form a dynamic seal.

A reciprocating plunger pump, comprising:
- a plunger;
- a body having a fluid end defining a stuffing box sealably receiving the plunger;
- a packing assembly disposed within the stuffing box including:
- a non-fluid elastomeric component having an at least partially tapered inner diameter and an outer diameter, and disposed within the stuffing box, engaging the stuffing box on the outer diameter, and axially compressed within the stuffing box;
- and
- a non-fluid wear component having an outer diameter sealably engaging the at least partially tapered inner diameter of the elastomeric component and an outer diameter dynamically contacting the plunger to form a dynamic seal;
- and
- means for axially compressing the elastomeric component within the stuffing box.

A method of operating a reciprocating plunger pump, comprising:
- reciprocating a plunger in a stuffing box;
- and
- sealing the reciprocation with a packing assembly with a dynamic seal, including:
- positioning a non-fluid elastomeric component within the stuffing box such that the elastomeric component engages the stuffing box on an outer diameter thereof and is axially compressed within the stuffing box;
- and
- positioning a non-fluid wear component within the stuffing box downstream of the elastomeric component such that an outer diameter thereof sealably engages the elastomeric component and an inner diameter thereof dynamically contacts the plunger.
