A redox-active, conductive, polycationic, and coordinating polymer with a coordinative redox deposition for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrodes. The electrodes can contain low loadings of earth-abundant catalysts and are highly active and stable under harsh conditions. The preparatory methods described herein are straightforward and can be utilized to prepare electrodes with different supports and metal ion precursors. Polycarbazole (PCz) provides a highly conductive, stable support for the OER catalysts. XPS and UV-vis studies indicate that the deposition proceeds by coordination to the nitrogen sites in PCz. PCz is believed to provide a local high [OH—] for the turnover limiting step in the OER.
