Abstract
A workpiece includes a substrate and a hard material layer disposed over the substrate. The hard material layer includes either (A) a metal nitride layer having a composition (Alx,Cry,Tiz,Mob)N with optionally added alloying elements Nb, B, Si, the metal nitride layer having a nitrogen ratio in a range of 45 to 55 at. % of the total lattice.

A workpiece comprising:
- a substrate, and
- a hard material layer disposed over the substrate, wherein the hard material layer comprises a metal nitride layer having a composition (Alx,Cry,Tiz,Mob)N with optionally added alloying elements (Nba,Bc,Sid), the metal nitride layer having a nitrogen ratio in a range of 45 to 55 at. % of a total lattice.
A method of manufacturing a workpiece comprising a substrate, and a hard material layer disposed over the substrate, wherein the hard material layer comprises a metal nitride layer having a composition (Alx,Cry,Tiz,Mob)N with optionally added alloying elements (Nba,Bc,Sid), the metal nitride layer having a nitrogen ratio in a range of 45 to 55 at. % of a total lattice, the method comprising:
- using physical vapor deposition and/or chemical vapor deposition to generate the hard material layer over the substrate.
