Abstract
Disclosed are compositions and methods for forming a multilayer coating including a waterborne basecoat composition, which comprises a film-forming resin comprising hydroxyl functional groups; a crosslinking-agent; at least one multifunctional isocyanate comprising between 4-6 isocyanate functional groups; and an aqueous solvent. The waterborne basecoat composition does not require preheating when employed in a multilayer coating process.
Claims20
A waterborne basecoat composition, comprising:
- a film-forming resin comprising hydroxyl functional groups;
- a crosslinking-agent;
- at least one multifunctional isocyanate comprising between 4-6 isocyanate functional groups;
- and
- an aqueous solvent,
- wherein the waterborne basecoat composition does not require preheating when employed in a multilayer coating process.
A method for forming a multilayer coating on a substrate comprising:
- forming an uncured basecoat film by applying a waterborne basecoat composition on the substrate;
- forming an uncured clearcoat film by applying a clearcoat composition on the uncured basecoat film;
- and
- simultaneously baking and curing the uncured basecoat film and the uncured clearcoat film,
- wherein the method does not include pre-heating the uncured basecoat film prior to forming the uncured clearcoat film,
- wherein the waterborne basecoat composition comprises a film-forming resin comprising hydroxyl functional groups, a crosslinking agent, at least one multifunctional isocyanate comprising at between 4-6 isocyanate functional groups, and an aqueous solvent, and wherein the waterborne basecoat composition does not require preheating.
