A carbon favorable process allows for a complete breakdown of concrete into its constituent materials that can be reused for construction thus promoting a circular economy by incorporating the chemical reactions associated with an acidic sulfate attack. This process is promoted by both chemical and electrochemical disassembling of the concrete matrix while preserving the value of the materials. Configurations herein separate the concrete into reusable fractions: gypsum, calcium carbonate, silicate, iron oxide/hydroxide, and cleaned aggregate residue. This approach both preserves and supports a circular economy for concrete by reducing the reliance of virgin material.
