A reverse osmosis (RO) unit's operating efficiency is enhanced by a reduced-salt stream and acid/base substances generated by an electrochemical reactor. The RO unit converts seawater into usable freshwater but generates a high-salt brine byproduct. The electrochemical reactor removes salt from the brine byproduct and the resulting reduced-salt stream is mixed with the seawater to form a feedwater stream supplied to the RO unit. The removed salt is converted into acid and base substances that are concentrated in separate product streams and utilized to automatically adjust a pH level of the feedwater stream in response to changes in the seawater chemistry of the seawater, thereby improving the RO unit's operating efficiency. The base product stream may also be used for ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE), and the acid product stream may also be used to reduce energy costs associated with crushing/grinding alkaline rock in an enhanced ocean weathering (EOW) process.
