Abstract
Systems and methods for producing chlorine dioxide in a two stage system and a single-stage system that provide high chlorate to chlorine dioxide efficiency with a compact design and low sulfuric acid requirements.
Claims20
A method for producing chlorine dioxide, comprising:
- receiving a mixture comprising sodium chlorate and hydrogen peroxide in a thermal energy input unit;
- heating the mixture in the thermal energy input unit;
- introducing the heated mixture into a reactor;
- contacting the heated mixture with sulfuric acid in the reactor to produce chlorine dioxide with at least 90% chlorate conversion;
- removing chlorine dioxide from the reactor;
- stopping production of chlorine dioxide by discontinuing flow of at least one of (i) the sodium chlorate and the hydrogen peroxide, and (ii) sulfuric acid, to the reactor;
- flushing the reactor with water;
- retaining water in the reactor;
- and
- draining water from the reactor prior to initiating startup of the reactor by contacting the heated mixture with sulfuric acid in the reactor.
The method of claim 1 , wherein heating the mixture of sodium chlorate and hydrogen peroxide in the thermal energy input unit increases the temperature of the mixture by 10 ℉ to 100 ℉ over ambient temperature.
The method of claim 1, wherein the sulfuric acid is a 70 to 80% sulfuric acid solution.
A method for producing chlorine dioxide, comprising:
- heating a mixture of sodium chlorate and hydrogen peroxide in a thermal energy input unit to raise a temperature of the mixture;
- introducing the heated mixture and sulfuric acid into a reactor, wherein the sulfuric acid is 78% or less sulfuric acid and is present in an amount of about 1.3 lbs to about 3.5 lbs per lb of chlorine dioxide produced;
- reacting the sodium chlorate, hydrogen peroxide and sulfuric acid in the reactor to produce chlorine dioxide with at least 90% chlorate conversion;
- and removing chlorine dioxide from the reactor.
