Abstract
An adjustable arm bike carrier system is provided that can include a base attachable to a motor vehicle, and at least one support member attached to the base and configured to support the tires of a bicycle. The system also includes a pivot axle, and an adjustable hook arm configured to rotate about the pivot axle in both directions and hold the tire. The hook arm can include a hook portion having a mechanical constraint for compressing the tire of the bicycle.
Claims20
An adjustable arm bike carrier system, comprising:
- a base configured to attach to a motor vehicle;
- at least one support member attached to the base and configured to support the first and second tires of a bicycle;
- a pivot axle;
- and
- an adjustable hook arm operatively connected to the at least one support member or the base at the pivot axle, the hook arm being configured to rotate about the pivot axle in both directions and configured to securely hold the front or rear tire of the bicycle on the bike carrier system, the hook arm comprising:
- an arm portion operatively connected to the pivot axle, and
- a hook portion having a mechanical constraint, wherein the mechanical constraint causes the hook portion to compress the front or rear tire of the bicycle and is unidirectional to continually provide contact of the hook portion with the tire.
A carrier system comprising a bike interference adjustment device, the system comprising:
- a base configured to attach to a motor vehicle;
- at least one tire support member attached to the base, wherein the at least one tire support member is configured to support the tires of at least one bicycle;
- at least one interference adjustment device located on the at least one tire support member, wherein the at least one interference adjustment device is configured to raise and lower a tire of the at least one bicycle located on the at least one tire support member.
A hitch tightening mechanism for a bike carrier system, comprising:
- a stinger tube connected to a base of the bike carrier system, wherein the stinger tube is configured for placement within a hitch receiver of a motor vehicle at a proximal end of the stinger tube,
- a linkage located within the stinger tube;
- a cam and a cam follower operatively connected to one another and located within the stinger tube, wherein the linkage is connected to the cam follower at a proximal end of the linkage;
- a drive end located at a distal end of the stinger tube, wherein the linkage is connected to the drive end at a distal end of the linkage;
- wherein the stinger tube includes an aperture on the stinger tube adjacent to the cam, and
- wherein to tighten the connection of the stinger tube within the hitch receiver of the motor vehicle, the drive end is configured to rotate causing the linkage to drive the cam follower, thereby rotating a top end of the cam to a location outside the aperture of the stinger tube, where the cam engages with the inside of the hitch receiver.
