A hybrid energy storage system used in an electric vehicle comprises multiple energy sources, including a fuel cell, a battery, a supercapacitor, and a photovoltaic panel. The system further comprises multiple DC-DC converters, a DC bus, a DC-AC inverter, and a sliding mode controller. Inputs of a first, a second, a third, and a fourth DC-DC converters are coupled to the fuel cell, the battery, the supercapacitor and the photovoltaic panel, respectively. Outputs of the first, second, third, and fourth DC-DC converters are coupled to the DC bus. The DC-AC inverter supplies AC electric power to a motor of an electric vehicle. The sliding mode controller controls operation of the hybrid energy storage system by applying a barrier-function-based controller gain to regulate a DC voltage at the DC bus to a reference voltage.
