Abstract
Present embodiments relate to suspension damping for a vehicle. More specifically, but without limitation, present embodiments relate to bypass valve assemblies which provide for adjustment of fluid bypass within the suspension damper to tune the suspension system of the vehicle.
Claims20
A suspension damper comprising:
- a cylinder;
- a sleeve (i) defining an internal chamber, (ii) positioned within the cylinder such that a space is defined between the cylinder and the sleeve, and (iii) defining at least one orifice to facilitate fluid flow between the internal chamber and the space;
- and
- a valve assembly disposed within the space and having
- a valve seat positioned on the sleeve,
- a valve positioned on the sleeve and over the at least one orifice, wherein the valve is operable to move along the sleeve to (i) disengage the valve seat to facilitate fluid flow through the at least one orifice and a gap defined between the valve and valve seat and (ii) engage the valve seat to close the gap, and wherein a disengaged position of the valve is adjustable to adjust a size of the gap.

A suspension damper comprising:
- a cylinder;
- a sleeve (i) defining an internal chamber, (ii) positioned within the cylinder such that a space is defined between the cylinder and the sleeve, and (iii) defining at least one orifice to facilitate fluid flow between the internal chamber and the space;
- and
- a valve assembly disposed within the space and having
- a valve seat extending circumferentially around the sleeve,
- a valve extending circumferentially around the sleeve and over the at least one orifice, wherein the valve is operable to (i) disengage the valve seat in an axial direction to facilitate fluid flow through the at least one orifice and a gap defined between the valve and valve seat and (ii) engage the valve seat in the axial direction to close the gap, and
- an adjustable seat extending circumferentially around the sleeve, operable to limit movement of the valve away from the valve seat in the axial direction, and having a position that is adjustable in the axial direction to adjust a size of the gap to tune rates of fluid flow through the at least one orifice.

A suspension damper comprising:
- an external cylinder;
- an internal sleeve (i) positioned within the external cylinder and (ii) defining orifices to facilitate fluid flow between the internal sleeve and a space defined between the internal sleeve and the external cylinder;
- and
- a plurality of valve assemblies disposed within the space and spaced apart from each other along the internal sleeve, each of the valve assemblies having
- a valve seat secured to an exterior of the internal sleeve,
- a valve ring positioned on the exterior of the internal sleeve and over one or more of the orifices, wherein the valve ring is operable to move along the internal sleeve to (i) disengage the valve seat to facilitate fluid flow through the one or more of the orifices and a gap defined between the valve ring and valve seat and (ii) engage the valve seat to close the gap, and
- an adjustable seat positioned on the internal sleeve, operable to limit movement of the valve ring away from the valve seat, and having a position that is adjustable along the internal sleeve to adjust a size of the gap to tune rates of fluid flow through the one or more of the orifices.
