A device for or of an extracorporeal blood treatment machine for producing and/or conditioning a dialysis liquid includes a fluid-carrying main line for introducing osmotic water, and at least one fluid-carrying secondary line attached to the fluid-carrying main line for feeding an additive into the osmotic water. At least one metering pump, in an intake phase/intake stroke, sucks the additive out of at least one storage container and, in a serially subsequent discharge phase/discharge stroke, expels the additive into the osmotic water. A stepper motor operates the metering pump, and an open-loop or closed-loop control unit controls or regulates the stepper motor. The open-loop or closed-loop control unit controls or regulates the stepper motor in such a way that the intake phase is shorter than the discharge phase.
