An imaging system for capturing images of the periphery of an eye of a patient is disclosed. An optical signal source provides an optical source light. A microlens array is placed at the pupil conjugate of the patient. An image sensor receives focused light from the microlens array. A horizontal scan system is coupled to the microlens array and the image sensor to capture wavefront images in a scan range in the horizontal plane to the eye. A vertical scan system is coupled to the microlens array and the image sensor to capture wavefront images in a scan range in a vertical plane to the eye. A controller controls the horizontal scan system and the vertical scan system. The horizontal scan system captures images in a horizontal scan. The vertical scan system captures images in a vertical scan. Both the horizontal scan system and the vertical scan system are activated to capture images in a diagonal scan.
