A vacuum cleaner having a first turbine and a second turbine, wherein the turbines are specified to generate a suction flow for inducting dust. The vacuum cleaner has a valve assembly, wherein the valve assembly is specified to allow a suction flow to flow successively or in parallel through the turbines. The operation of the vacuum cleaner can be designed to be more variable by providing a wider characteristic suction curve of the vacuum cleaner. The turbines of the vacuum cleaner can be operated in series or in parallel, and the suction properties of the vacuum cleaner can thus be optimally adapted to different specific applications. A suction operation of the vacuum cleaner can be maintained when a filter unit of the vacuum cleaner is being cleaned. A method for operating a vacuum cleaner with two turbines, wherein the vacuum cleaner can be operated in a serial or parallel operation.
