Abstract
A drill bit for use in back drilling of a printed circuit board (PCB) is provided. The drill bit includes a cylindrical body having an outer surface and an end surface, the end surface being substantially perpendicular to a vertical central axis of the cylindrical body. The end surface defines at least one cutting portion. The drill bit also includes a non-conductive coating layer disposed over the cylindrical body proximal to the end surface and at least a portion of the end surface. The at least one cutting portion remains uncoated.
Claims20
A drill bit configured for back drilling of a printed circuit board (PCB), the drill bit comprising:
- a cylindrical body having an outer surface and an end surface, the end surface being substantially perpendicular to a vertical central axis of the cylindrical body, wherein the end surface defines at least one cutting portion;
- and
- a non-conductive coating layer disposed over the cylindrical body proximal to the end surface and at least a portion of the end surface, wherein the at least one cutting portion remains uncoated.
A drill bit configured for back drilling of a printed circuit board (PCB) comprising:
- a body extending along a longitudinal axis;
- at least one electrically conductive cutting portion disposed at a distal end of the body, wherein the at least one electrically conductive cutting portion extends axially away from a distal end of the body and the at least one electrically conductive cutting portion includes a cutting edge configured to remove material from a workpiece during drilling;
- and
- a non-conductive coating layer disposed around the at least one electrically conductive cutting portion such that the at least one electrically conductive cutting portion is exposed, wherein an internal conductive trace of the PCB is grounded during back drilling, wherein the drill bit is configured to remove material from at least portion of a through-hole in the PCB to form a blind via and configured to stop rotating when the at least one electrically conductive cutting portion of the drill bit touches the internal conductive trace.
A drill bit configured for back drilling of a printed circuit board (PCB), the drill bit comprising:
- a non-conductive cylindrical body having an outer surface and an end surface, the end surface being substantially perpendicular to a vertical central axis of the cylindrical body, wherein the end surface defines at least one cutting portion;
- and
- a conductive coating layer disposed over the cylindrical body proximal to the end surface and at least a portion of the end surface, wherein the at least one cutting portion is coated.
