System and Method for Enabling High Speed Optical Communication Inside and Between PC Boards, 3D Multi-Chip Modules and Other Electronic Systems

A system for transmitting a light signal, comprising:

• a first circuit board substrate having a first set of side edges;
• a second circuit board substrate having a second set of side edges, wherein said first circuit board and said second circuit board have an obstructed line of sight therebetween:
• a first extension substrate mounted to said first circuit board substrate, wherein said first extension substrate extends through a first position outside said first set of edges;
• a second extension substrate mounted to said second circuit board substrate, wherein said second extension substrate extends through a second position outside said second set of edges, and wherein said first position has an unobstructed line of sight pathway to said second position;
• a light signal source mounted to said first extension substrate at said first position, wherein said light signal source emits said light signal toward said second position;
• a light signal detector mounted on said second extension substrate at said second position;
• wherein said light signal passes from said light signal source to said light signal detector along said unobstructed line of sight pathway.
