An online system provides a communication interface enabling users to communicate with pickers who are fulfilling orders placed by users. The communication interface allows a user to request modifications to an order (e.g., adding or removing an item or adding a note for the picker about an ordered item). However, messages received from the communication interface are unstructured, so a user's requested modification for an item may be mistaken by a picker to relate to a different item. To prevent such confusion, the system uses an artificial intelligence (AI) agent (e.g., a tuned large language model) to interpret user requests and to generate an action plan comprising structured data for the picker. The action plan is presented as a user interface element in the communication interface to the user for confirmation, and the picker performs the action plan when it is confirmed by the user.
