Contextual search on multimedia content

A method implemented by one or more processors, the method comprising:

• providing a multimedia content item for presentation to a user via a client computing device;
• receiving a query from the user during the presentation of the multimedia content item, the query comprising one or more terms;
• identifying a current playback time of the multimedia content item at which the query is received;
• extracting one or more entities that appear in the multimedia content item within a predetermined range of time relative to the current playback time;
• generating a rewritten query by combining the one or more terms of the query with the one or more entities;
• processing the rewritten query to identify a result that is responsive to the rewritten query;
• and
• providing the result for display at the client computing device concurrently with the presentation of the multimedia content item, without interrupting the presentation of the multimedia content item.

A system comprising:

• at least one processor;
• and
• memory storing instructions that, when executed, cause the at least one processor to be operable to:
• provide a multimedia content item for presentation to a user via a client computing device;
• receive a query from the user during the presentation of the multimedia content item, the query comprising one or more terms;
• identify a current playback time of the multimedia content item at which the query is received;
• extract one or more entities that appear in the multimedia content item within a predetermined range of time relative to the current playback time;
• generate a rewritten query by combining the one or more terms of the query with the one or more entities;
• process the rewritten query to identify a result that is responsive to the rewritten query;
• and
• provide the result for display at the client computing device concurrently with the presentation of the multimedia content item, without interrupting the presentation of the multimedia content item.

A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing instructions that, when executed by at least one processor, cause the at least one processor to perform operations to:

• provide a multimedia content item for presentation to a user via a client computing device;
• receive a query from the user during the presentation of the multimedia content item, the query comprising one or more terms;
• identify a current playback time of the multimedia content item at which the query is received;
• extract one or more entities that appear in the multimedia content item within a predetermined range of time relative to the current playback time;
• generate a rewritten query by combining the one or more terms of the query with the one or more entities;
• process the rewritten query to identify a result that is responsive to the rewritten query;
• and
• provide the result for display at the client computing device concurrently with the presentation of the multimedia content item, without interrupting the presentation of the multimedia content item.
