A method of characterizing a sample, the method comprising:
- treating DNA in the sample with a reagent that modifies DNA in a methylation-specific manner, wherein the sample is obtained from a subject having or suspected of having a gastric neoplasm;
- amplifying the treated DNA using primers specific for one or more genes selected from ZNF569, NDRG4, CLEC11A, ST8SIA1, CD1D, OSR2, GRIN2D, and EMX1;
- and
- determining a methylation level for the one or more genes using methylation specific polymerase chain reaction, nucleic acid sequencing, mass spectrometry, methylation specific nuclease, mass-based separation, or target capture.
1 more element
A system for screening for a neoplasm in a sample obtained from a subject, the system comprising:
- an analysis component configured to determine the methylation state of a sample,
- a software component configured to compare the methylation state of the sample with a control sample or a reference sample methylation state recorded in a database, and
- an alert component configured to determine a single value based on a combination of methylation states and alert a user of a cancer-associated methylation state.
