Abstract
Disclosed are zwitterion-containing copolymers and their use for creating functional surfaces on silicone-based materials. These copolymers are blended with silicone precursors at low concentrations before curing. The chemical structure of the copolymer additive leads it to segregate to the surface particularly upon contact with polar or aqueous media.
Claims28
A copolymer, comprising a plurality of zwitterionic repeat units, and a plurality of second repeat units;
- wherein each second repeat unit comprises a poly(dialkyl siloxane) pendant group.
The copolymer of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the copolymer is not a block copolymer
The copolymer of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the polydialkylsiloxane is polydimethylsiloxane.
The copolymer of any one of the preceding claims, wherein each of the second repeat units independently comprises methacryate, acrylate, acrylamide, methacrylamide, or styrene.
The copolymer of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the second repeat units are monomethacryloxypropyl terminated polydimethylsiloxane.
The copolymer of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the copolymer is poly(polydimethylsiloxane monomethacrylate-random-2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine).
The copolymer of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the average molecular weight of the second repeat units is from about 300 g/mol to 30,000 g/mol.
The copolymer of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the average molecular weight of the second repeat units is from about 300 g/mol to 3000 g/mol.
The copolymer of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the average molecular weight of the repeat second units is from about 350 g/mol to 1200 g/mol.
The copolymer of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the zwitterionic repeat units constitute 10-50% by weight of the copolymer, and the second repeat units constitute 50-90% by weight of the copolymer.
The copolymer of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the zwitterionic repeat units constitute 20-40% by weight of the copolymer, and the second repeat units constitute 60-80% by weight of the copolymer.
The copolymer of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the zwitterionic repeat units constitute 20-30% by weight of the copolymer, and the second repeat units constitute 70-80% by weight of the copolymer.
A sample of polydimethylsiloxane comprising the copolymer of any one of the preceding claims.
