Methods for the dietary management of depression in a subject in need thereof include administering a composition including a therapeutically effective amount of β-hydroxybutyrate (βHB), salt thereof, or a metabolic precursor thereof to the subject. The composition of βHB, salt thereof, or the metabolic precursor thereof may be formulated as food, a food product, a food supplement, or a combination thereof. The composition may be formulated for oral administration, optionally together with micronutrients. Administration elevates circulating βHB and reduces depressive symptoms as assessed by standardized clinical rating scales.
A method for the dietary management of depression in a subject in need thereof, which comprises orally administering a composition comprising a therapeutically effective amount of β-hydroxybutyrate (βHB), a salt or acid thereof, or a metabolic precursor thereof, to the subject, and a micronutrient component comprising one or more vitamin(s), one or more mineral nutrient(s), one or more amino acid(s) or derivative(s) thereof, one or more antioxidant(s), or a combination thereof.
