Abstract
Methods for forming patterned displays including separated portions of encapsulated electrophoretic media disposed between contiguous light-transmissive electrodes. The resulting patterned electrophoretic display allows a viewer to see through the gaps between the portions of encapsulated electrophoretic media, thereby allowing the viewer to visualize surfaces or objects behind the electrophoretic display.
Claims12
A method of making an electrophoretic display, comprising:
- providing a film comprising a first light-transmissive substrate, a first light-transmissive electrode, and a light-transmissive semi-conductive adhesive;
- providing a second contiguous light-transmissive electrode on a second light-transmissive substrate;
- providing a stencil representing a desired pattern of encapsulated electrophoretic media in the finished electrophoretic display;
- applying a layer of encapsulated electrophoretic media onto the second contiguous light-transmissive electrode through the stencil;
- removing the stencil to create a first portion of encapsulated electrophoretic media and a second portion of encapsulated electrophoretic media on the second contiguous light-transmissive electrode;
- laminating the film atop the first portion of encapsulated electrophoretic media and the second portion of encapsulated electrophoretic media, wherein the light-transmissive semi-conductive adhesive is disposed between the first contiguous light-transmissive electrode and the second contiguous light-transmissive electrode and separates the first portion of encapsulated electrophoretic media from the second portion of encapsulated electrophoretic media.
