Abstract

A protective device may include a shield body having a curved profile configured to correspond to a rear contour of a helmet. The shield body may be formed as a single piece of non-ballistic plastic. An interior surface of the shield body may feature a plurality of extending geometric structures. At least two of the structures may include unequal heights relative to the interior surface. The geometric structures may comprise hexagonal prisms that are at least partially hollow. An exterior face of the shield body may include a plurality of dimples. The protective device may include an outward flare at a bottom edge, a bumper near a top edge, and/or an attachment assembly for securing the shield body to the helmet.

Dependent claims

An apparatus for mitigating a blast wave comprising:

a shield body having a curved profile configured to correspond to a rear contour of a helmet, wherein the shield body is formed as a single piece of non-ballistic plastic;
an interior surface of the shield body comprising a plurality of adjacent geometric structures extending therefrom in a tessellating pattern, wherein at least two of the plurality of adjacent geometric structures have unequal heights relative to the interior surface to define a structurally interrupted face arranged to dissipate a blast wave;
and
an exterior face of the shield body opposite the interior surface, wherein the exterior face has a plurality of dimples formed therein.
