Abstract
A method for power transmission method includes providing first and second shafts, a gear assembly having first and second gear ratios, and first and second coupling assemblies. The first coupling assembly enabling torque transfer from the first shaft to the second shaft, and the second coupling assembly enabling torque transfer from the first shaft to the second shaft. The speed of the first shaft varies, wherein the deployment of a locking element of the second coupling assembly is based on the speed of the first shaft.
Claims20
A power transmission system comprising:
- a first rotatable member;
- a second rotatable member;
- a third rotatable member;
- an actuator, the actuator including a stator having at least one electromagnetic source and a translator that connects to and rotates with the first rotatable member, wherein the electromagnetic source generates an electromagnetic force to move the translator linearly between axial positions;
- a first dog clutch that includes a dog connected to and moving with the translator, wherein movement of the translator moves the dog of the first dog clutch between a deployed position and a nondeployed position, wherein the dog of the first dog clutch in the deployed position engages the second rotatable member to couple and transfer torque from the first rotatable member to the second rotatable member;
- a second dog clutch that includes a dog connected to and moving with the translator, wherein movement of the translator moves the dog of the second dog clutch between a deployed position and a nondeployed position, wherein the dog of the second dog clutch in the deployed position engages the third rotatable member to couple and transfer torque from the first rotatable member to the third rotatable member;
- and
- at least one axial position of the translator corresponds with a neutral position, in the neutral position, the dog of the first dog clutch is in the nondeployed position and the dog of the second dog clutch is in the nondeployed position.
A power transmission system comprising:
- a first shaft rotatable at a variable speed;
- a second shaft rotatable at a variable speed;
- a gear assembly between the first shaft and the second shaft, the gear assembly including at least a first gear ratio and a second gear ratio;
- a first dog clutch enabling torque transfer from the first shaft to the second shaft in the first gear ratio, the first dog clutch movable between a deployed and nondeployed position;
- a second dog clutch enabling torque transfer from the first shaft to the second shaft in the second gear ratio, the second dog clutch movable between a deployed and nondeployed position;
- and
- an actuator, the actuator includes a stator having at least one electromagnetic source, the actuator operative to move the position of the first dog clutch and the position of the second dog clutch based on the speed of the first shaft without a change of direction of the first shaft relative to the speed of the first gear ratio and without transferring torque from the first shaft to the second shaft when the actuator moves the first dog clutch and the second dog clutch.
A power transmission system comprising:
- a first shaft rotatable at a variable speed;
- a second shaft rotatable at a variable speed;
- a gear assembly between the first shaft and the second shaft, the gear assembly including at least a first gear ratio and a second gear ratio;
- a one-way clutch enabling torque transfer from the first shaft to the second shaft in the first gear ratio;
- a dog clutch movable between a deployed and nondeployed position, the dog clutch enabling torque transfer from the first shaft to the second shaft in the second gear ratio;
- and
- enabling torque transfer from the first shaft to the second shaft in one of the first gear ratio and the second gear ratio wherein the dog clutch moves between the deployed and nondeployed position based on the speed of the first shaft and the speed of the second gear ratio.
