A system for diagnosing operational conditions of a well pumping system including a portable monitoring apparatus configured for receiving time-series telemetry; a device processor in communication with the portable monitoring apparatus; and a non-transitory computer readable medium having instructions stored thereon for performing the following steps: processing the received telemetry signals to generate a set of derived operational parameters; evaluating the derived operational parameters against a plurality of predefined conditions to classify the system into one or more operational states; upon classification of an operational state, selectively invoking specialized diagnostic agents, each agent being configured to evaluate a distinct subsystem of the well pumping system; independently evaluating the received operational parameters to determine whether system anomalies are present, wherein each agent produces a structured intermediate diagnostic output; aggregating the intermediate diagnostic outputs and performing cross-agent validation to determine whether each diagnostic output is corroborated or contradicted; and producing an auto-diagnosis.
