A fuel composition is disclosed. The composition includes a hydrocarbon-based fuel comprising gasoline or diesel and one or more guanidine-based or amidine-based detergents, or an acceptable salt thereof.

A fuel composition comprising:
- i) a hydrocarbon-based fuel comprising gasoline or diesel;
- ii) one or more guanidine-based or amidine-based detergents, or an acceptable salt thereof.
A method for controlling carbon deposits in an internal combustion engine comprising:
- providing a fuel in the internal combustion engine, wherein the fuel comprises:
- i) a hydrocarbon-based fuel comprising gasoline or diesel;
- and
- ii) one or more guanidine-based or amidine-based detergents, or an acceptable salt thereof.
