An underwater metachronal propulsion system includes a plurality of appendage propulsors arranged in a plurality of rows, wherein each appendage propulsor of the plurality comprises a shaft and at least two flexible paddles attached thereto. Each appendage propulsor is independently moveable between a forward recovery stroke position and a backward power stroke position. The at least two flexible paddles attached to the shaft are configured to at least partially overlap each other in the forward recovery stroke position and to spread apart in the backward power stroke position. Each shaft is configured to pivot back and forth on an axis between the forward recovery stroke position and the backward power stroke position. A motion control program is configured to independently control motion of each appendage propulsor to provide metachronal motion of the plurality of appendage propulsors.
An underwater metachronal propulsion system comprising
The underwater metachronal propulsion system of claim 5 wherein the actuator is an electric actuator, an electromagnetic actuator, a hydraulic actuator, or a pneumatic actuator.
