A thermal printer includes a thermal head that prints on a recording medium and a platen roller that conveys the medium while contacting its adhesive surface. A fixed blade is arranged downstream of the thermal head, and a movable blade is arranged downstream of the platen roller. A non-adhesive member is positioned adjacent to the movable blade on the adhesive-surface side. The movable blade advances toward the fixed blade to cut the medium and retracts afterward. During cutting, the blade edge is positioned farther toward the distal end side than an end of the non-adhesive member, while during retraction it is positioned farther toward the proximal end side. This positional relationship causes the adhesive surface of the medium to contact the non-adhesive member and separate from the movable blade. As a result, the printer reliably peels adhesive media from the blade without requiring any dedicated peeling mechanism.
