Dental compositions and related methods and devices

A dental composition comprising:

• a liquid carrier comprising water and at least one organic liquid selected from the group consisting of an alcohol, a polyol, an olefinic monomer, glycerin, propylene glycol, polyethylene glycol, ethanol, acetone;
• a thickening agent comprising a polyvinylpyrrolidone having vinylpyrrolidone side groups;
• and
• an active agent,
• wherein the composition has a viscosity sufficient to increase residence time of the composition on a tooth surface and reduce uncontrolled spreading relative to an otherwise identical composition lacking a thickening agent,
• wherein the dental composition is in the form of a homogeneous gel and is capable of remaining homogeneous for at least about 8 weeks,
• wherein the dental composition exhibits relatively more storage stability compared to the dental composition without the thickening agent.
