Abstract
The present disclosure includes an orthopedic device, such as an implant, that comprises one or more latticed regions to aid in fusion or osteo-integration between the implant and a specific patient. The implant may have periodic, organic, hybrid lattice structures or a combination thereof to further facilitate biocompatibility and improve mechanical characteristics of the implant. Methods for fabricating a customized device are also described herein.
Claims20
A patient-matched interbody implant comprising:
- a body sized and shaped for placement between opposing vertebral endplates of a specific patient, the body including an external frame, an internal frame defining a graft window, and a latticed region disposed between the external frame and the internal frame;
- wherein the latticed region comprises:
- a core lattice comprising a periodic repeating lattice structure;
- a surface lattice disposed along at least one patient-contacting surface of the body, the surface lattice comprising an organic lattice structure generated from patient-specific anatomical data;
- and
- a transition lattice interconnecting the core lattice and the surface lattice;
- wherein the transition lattice comprises lattice features that gradually change from the periodic repeating lattice structure of the core lattice to the organic lattice structure of the surface lattice;
- and
- wherein the core lattice, the surface lattice, and the transition lattice form a continuous, interconnected structure.
A method of manufacturing a patient-matched interbody implant, comprising:
- receiving patient-specific anatomical data corresponding to spinal anatomy of a specific patient;
- generating a digital model of an implant body sized and shaped for placement between opposing vertebral endplates of the specific patient, the digital model comprising an external frame, an internal frame defining a graft window, and at least one patient-matched surface;
- assigning a core lattice to an internal region of the implant body, the core lattice comprising a periodic repeating lattice structure;
- assigning a surface lattice to the at least one patient-matched surface, the surface lattice comprising an organic lattice structure based on the patient-specific anatomical data;
- assigning a transition lattice between the core lattice and the surface lattice, the transition lattice comprising lattice features that gradually change from the periodic repeating lattice structure to the organic lattice structure;
- and
- additively manufacturing the implant body so that the core lattice, the surface lattice, and the transition lattice form a continuous, interconnected structure.
