Abstract
Techniques are described for bone-graft harvesting in orthopedic surgery. Processing circuitry may obtain a virtual model of a bone graft to be harvested from a donor bone, wherein the virtual model of the bone graft specifies a volume of the donor bone to be harvested as the bone graft; and output for display, via a visualization device, a graphical representation of the specified volume to be harvested relative to a portion of the donor bone viewable via the visualization device.
Claims20
A system for guiding bone graft harvesting, the system comprising:
- processing circuitry configured to:
- obtain a virtual model of a bone graft;
- receive image data comprising a representation of a semi-spherical bone cap removed from a humeral head;
- compare a size and a shape of the virtual model of the bone graft to the representation of the semi-spherical bone cap to determine an indication of a difference in geometry between the semi-spherical bone cap and the virtual model of the bone graft;
- generate, based on the indication of the difference in geometry, information indicative of a location that is to be cut on a perimeter of the semi-spherical bone cap;
- generate information indicative of an axis along which to cut the semi-spherical bone cap and a maximum depth at which to cut the semi-spherical bone cap;
- and
- output the information indicative of the location, the information indicative of the axis, and the maximum depth to a surgical tracking system to guide a surgical tool to remove material at the perimeter of the semi-spherical bone cap until a shape of the semi-spherical bone cap accurately matches or mirrors the shape of the virtual model of the bone graft.
A method for guiding bone graft harvesting, the method comprising:
- obtaining, by processing circuitry of a system, a virtual model of a bone graft;
- receiving, by the processing circuitry, image data comprising a representation of a semi-spherical bone cap removed from a humeral head;
- comparing, by the processing circuitry, a size and a shape of the virtual model of the bone graft to the representation of the semi-spherical bone cap to determine an indication of a difference in geometry between the semi-spherical bone cap and the virtual model of the bone graft;
- generating, by the processing circuitry and based on the indication of the difference in geometry, information indicative of a location that is to be cut on a perimeter of the semi-spherical bone cap;
- generating, by the processing circuitry, information indicative of an axis along which to cut the semi-spherical bone cap and a maximum depth at which to cut the semi-spherical bone cap;
- and
- outputting, by the processing circuitry, the information indicative of the location, information indicative of the axis, and the maximum depth to a surgical tracking system to guide a surgical tool to remove material at the perimeter of the semi-spherical bone cap until a shape of the semi-spherical bone cap accurately matches or mirrors the shape of the virtual model of the bone graft.
A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing instructions that when executed causes processing circuitry to:
- obtain a virtual model of a bone graft;
- receive image data comprising a representation of a semi-spherical bone cap removed from a humeral head;
- compare a size and a shape of the virtual model of the bone graft to the representation of the semi-spherical bone cap to determine an indication of a difference in geometry between the semi-spherical bone cap and the virtual model of the bone graft;
- generate, based on the indication of the difference in geometry, information indicative of a location that is to be cut on a perimeter of the semi-spherical bone cap;
- generate information indicative of an axis along which to cut the semi-spherical bone cap and a maximum depth at which to cut the semi-spherical bone cap;
- and
- output the information indicative of the location, information indicative of the axis, and the maximum depth to a surgical tracking system to guide a surgical tool to remove material at the perimeter of the semi-spherical bone cap until a shape of the semi-spherical bone cap accurately matches or mirrors the shape of the virtual model of the bone graft.
