Method and device for providing an afterload to a beating heart. The afterload device is connected to the heart for receiving fluid flow expelled by the ventricle and comprises an afterload body, a valve body and a positioning device for positioning the valve body in the afterload body for forming an adjustable resistor. A control device receives input data, such as pressure and/or fluid flow rates and/or valve body position, and is arranged to adjust the adjustable resistor to have a first conductance at the start of the systolic phase, which increases during a first part of the systolic phase followed by a decrease of conductance during a second part of the systolic phase. An auxiliary fluid flow is provided to the connection between the afterload device and the ventricle, which is divided in a reverse fluid flow towards the ventricle and a fluid flow through the resistor.
A method of providing an afterload to a beating heart ex vivo, comprising
