Abstract

An improved system for accessing food data and tracking a user's food intake includes a nutrition information system and a mobile PDA or smartphone-based tag reading system. The two systems are configured to communication. The mobile tag reading system includes a tag capture device for reading the nutritional tag, and a decoder for decoding the header or visual effects included in the nutritional tag to identify the predetermined profile. The decoder is also configured to decode the nutritional tag to generate the subset of the dietary product descriptions and associated nutritional values based upon the predetermined profile. A tracking log is included for storing the associated nutritional values or the modified associated nutritional values based upon input from the user.

Dependent claims

A method of using a computing device having a user interface and capable of scanning a coded tag comprising the steps of:

scanning the coded tag to identify a list of menu items, at least one menu item having at least two food components associated with such menu item;
presenting through the user interface the one menu item and any food components associated therewith in response to scanning the coded tag;
accepting a first selection through the user interface identifying one food component presented, said food component defining a selected food component;
identifying a number of different food components associated with the selected food component and presenting each different food component through the user interface;
accepting a second selection through the user interface identifying one of the different food components and modifying the one menu item to include the different food component selected in place of the selected food component;
and
presenting nutritional information associated with the menu item as modified through the user interface.

scanning the coded tag to identify a list of menu items, at least one menu item having at least two food components associated with such menu item;
presenting through the user interface the one menu item and any food components associated therewith in response to scanning the coded tag;
accepting a first selection through the user interface identifying one food component presented, said food component defining a first selected food component;
removing the first selected food component and modifying the one menu item to exclude the first selected food component;
and
presenting nutritional information associated with the menu item as modified through the user interface.

a computing device comprising a processor, a memory, and a user interface;
an electronic scanning device integrated into the computing device capable of scanning a coded tag associated with a plurality of meal choices;
machine-readable instructions stored in the memory that, when executed by the processor, cause the computing device to at least:
decode the scanned coded tag to obtain at least one of the meal choices and a plurality of default food components for the at least one of the meal choices;
present the at least one of the meal choices and the plurality of default food components through the user interface;
obtain a first user input through the user interface indicating a selection of one default food component within the plurality of default food components;
obtain a list of substitutable food components for the selected default food component;
present the list of substitutable food components for the selected food component through the user interface;
obtain a second user input through the user interface indicating a selection of a substitutable food component from the respective list of substitutable food components;
obtain nutritional information for the meal choice presented based at least in part on the selection of the substitutable food component from the respective list of substitutable food components;
and
present the nutritional information through the user interface.
