Optical System

The image projector of claim ‎1, wherein the second surface of the first refractive lens is a convex surface.

The image projector of claim ‎1, wherein the field lens arrangement further comprises at least a second refractive lens providing a third surface in facing relation to the second surface, the third surface having an opposite sign of curvature to the second surface, the field lens arrangement terminating in a planar final lens surface parallel to the planar first surface.

The image projector of claim ‎1, wherein the light emitting pixel elements emit light of at least a first color, the image projector further comprising:

• (a) a second emissive image source device comprising a two-dimensional array of light emitting pixel elements formed on a semiconductor substrate, each of the light emitting pixel elements being selectively actuatable to emit light of at least a second color through a planar output surface of the second emissive image source device;(b) a second field lens arrangement optically coupled to the planar output surface of the second emissive image source;
• and(c) a dichroic combiner deployed to combine light of the first color from the emissive image source with light of the second color from the second emissive image source.

The image projector of claim ‎1, wherein the light emitting pixel elements emit light of a first color, the image projector further comprising:

• (a) a second emissive image source device comprising a two-dimensional array of light emitting pixel elements formed on a semiconductor substrate, each of the light emitting pixel elements being selectively actuatable to emit light of a second color through a planar output surface of the second emissive image source device;(b) a second field lens arrangement optically coupled to the planar output surface of the second emissive image source;(c) a third emissive image source device comprising a two-dimensional array of light emitting pixel elements formed on a semiconductor substrate, each of the light emitting pixel elements being selectively actuatable to emit light of a third color through a planar output surface of the third emissive image source device;(d) a third field lens arrangement optically coupled to the planar output surface of the third emissive image source;
• and(e) an X-cube or other trichroic combiner deployed to combine light of the first color from the emissive image source with light of the second color from the second emissive image source and with light of the third color from the third emissive image source.

The image projector of claim ‎1, further comprising:

• a polarizing beam splitter (PBS) prism containing a PBS surface and having a plurality of prism faces including an input face, a collimating optics face and an output face,
• and wherein the collimating optical arrangement includes a reflective lens, the collimating optical arrangement being associated with the collimating optics face of the PBS prism,
• wherein the PBS prism is configured to receive light emitted by the emissive image source through the input face, to direct at least part of the light towards the collimating optical arrangement and to direct a reflected collimated image so as to exit from the output face.
