Drive route selection methodology

A system for sensing air quality with a sensor platform, comprising:

• one or more processors configured to:
• obtain historical air quality measurements obtained by a plurality of mobile sensors;
• determine, based at least in part on the historical air quality measurements, a statistical measure for each of a plurality of spatial partitions of a geographic region;
• determine a variable-resolution partitioning of the geographic region into at least one coarse region and at least one fine region based on the statistical measure, wherein the coarse region corresponds to one or more partitions satisfying a first criterion and the fine region corresponds to one or more partitions satisfying a second criterion;
• and
• direct a first subset of the plurality of mobile sensors toward the at least one coarse region and a second subset of the plurality of mobile sensors toward the at least one fine region,
• wherein a variance of air quality measurements associated with the fine region is greater than a variance of air quality measurements associated with the coarse region;
• and
• a memory coupled to the one or more processors and configured to provide the one or more processors with instructions.

A computer program product for sensing air quality with a sensor platform, the computer program product being embodied in a tangible computer readable storage medium and comprising computer instructions for:

• obtaining historical air quality measurements obtained by a plurality of mobile sensors;
• determining, based at least in part on the historical air quality measurements, a statistical measure for each of a plurality of spatial partitions of a geographic region;
• determining a variable-resolution partitioning of the geographic region into at least one coarse region and at least one fine region based on the statistical measure, wherein the coarse region corresponds to one or more partitions satisfying a first criterion and the fine region corresponds to one or more partitions satisfying a second criterion;
• and
• directing a first subset of the plurality of mobile sensors toward the at least one coarse region and a second subset of the plurality of mobile sensors toward the at least one fine region,
• wherein a variance of air quality measurements associated with the fine region is greater than a variance of air quality measurements associated with the coarse region.
