A hydrogen leak detector for detecting leaks in hydrogen gas conducting components includes a hydrogen gas detector to measure hydrogen gas concentration in a gas conduction path. A first gas sensor is hydrogen selective and adapted to react to hydrogen concentrations within a first range below a first threshold. A second gas sensor is sensitive to hydrogen and a secondary gas different from hydrogen, and is adapted to react to hydrogen concentrations within a second range above the first threshold. The detector calibrates the second sensor for low hydrogen concentrations present in the ambient atmosphere by comparing measurements from the first and second sensors and assigning the signal of the second sensor to correspond to a non-leak concentration when the first sensor indicates a hydrogen concentration below a predetermined value. A leak is indicated when the second sensor measures a concentration above a second threshold.
