An illumination system includes a lighting module having a plurality of light emitting diodes and a flexible optically transmissive sheet disposed to receive light from the lighting module. The sheet has a multi-layer laminated structure including optically transmissive layers and an optically transmissive adhesive layer, and has a generally rectangular shape and a thickness between 200 micrometers and 1 millimeter. At least one layer includes a regular array of linear channels extending between edges of the sheet, with side walls of the channels reflecting light by total internal reflection. In some configurations, another layer includes a second regular array of linear channels oriented at an angle relative to the first array. A textured optically transmissive layer defines a textured outer surface and is bonded to channel-separating surface portions by the adhesive layer. A broad-area reflective surface reflectively scatters light received directly or indirectly from the sheet.
