A self-adaptive hydropower plant (1) that enables a continuously circulating volume of water within a closed loop flow path for generating electricity. The plant comprises a primary reservoir (2) for storing and providing a supply of water, a storage tank (3) elevated above the primary reservoir for receiving water from the primary reservoir, a diaphragm (4) within the tank, the diaphragm defining upper and lower chambers (UC, LC) in the tank and the diaphragm being moveable within the tank, a plurality of secondary reservoirs (6, 10, 12) located at an elevation below the tank but above the primary reservoir, at least one turbine (13) positioned below the secondary reservoirs but above the primary reservoir for generating electricity from water distributed from the secondary reservoirs to the primary reservoir and a system controller (14) for controlling and monitoring the operation and flow path of water from the primary reservoir to the tank and secondary reservoirs. The movement of the diaphragm within the tank facilitates the distribution of water from the tank into the secondary reservoirs. The secondary reservoirs are adapted to facilitate the distribution of water to the turbine and the movement of the diaphragm within the tank is in synchrony with the secondary reservoirs to initiate the replenishment of water in the tank by the primary reservoir. The water in the primary reservoir is selectively distributed to the tank and the secondary reservoirs to reduce water loss.
