Radiative electric furnaces and methods of using such furnaces (e.g., for steam cracking) are disclosed. Furnaces can include heating elements configured to add thermal energy to a heating chamber, hollow coils extending from a first end of a heating chamber toward a second end of the heating chamber and between the heating elements, such that process fluid can be heated as it passes through the coil toward the second end. Furnaces can include one or more fluid inlet conduits for delivering the process fluid to inlet sections of heating coils, with each fluid inlet conduit having a preheat section that extends through at least a part of the heating chamber closer to the second end than to the first end to receive thermal radiation from a portion of the heating elements. The preheat section can advantageously preheat the process fluid and reduce the maximum temperature experienced by the heating elements.
