An apparatus, such as a switch, is provided that comprises, in one example, a housing that includes a plurality of module cages that receive optical and/or transceiver interface modules. In a further example, the cages are provided in sub-assembly enclosures, which may also include connectors and cable bundles that constitute part of electrical connection to a processor, such as a switch ASIC, provided on a vertical line card within the housing. Thus, in the event of a fault or defect in one or more of the fiber bundles or other defective component, only the sub-assembly enclosure including the defective fiber bundle or component need be replaced, such that there is no need to disable the entire switch. Accordingly, a more efficient repair may be made compared to a switch in which the cables are not so modularized. Alternatively, the cages and interface modules may be provided outside the sub-assembly enclosures.
