Display-optimized light field representations

A computer-implemented method, comprising:

• accessing image data of a scene of a media asset, wherein:
• the image data comprises a first two-dimensional (2D) parallax view and a second 2D parallax view of a parallax frame for a three-dimensional (3D) display, the parallax frame corresponding to a timepoint of the media asset;
• and
• the first 2D parallax view corresponds to a first perspective of the scene at the timepoint and the second 2D parallax view corresponds to a second perspective of the scene at the timepoint;
• based at least in part on determining that a size and a location of a first region within the first 2D parallax view corresponds to a size and a location of a second region within the second 2D parallax view, selecting the first region and the second region for transmission to a first display module of the 3D display, wherein the first region corresponds to the first perspective and the second region corresponds to the second perspective;
• based at least in part on determining that a size and a location of a third region within the first 2D parallax view corresponds to a size and a location of a fourth region within the second 2D parallax view, selecting the third region and the fourth region for transmission to a second display module of the 3D display, wherein the third region corresponds to the first perspective and the fourth region corresponds to the second perspective;
• transmitting, for display by way of the first display module, first encoded data indicative of the first region and the second region;
• and
• transmitting, for display by way of the second display module, second encoded data indicative of the third region and the fourth region.

A system, comprising:

• input/output (I/O) circuitry;
• and
• control circuitry configured to:
• access image data of a scene of a media asset, wherein the image data is received via the I/O circuitry, and wherein:
• the image data comprises a first two-dimensional (2D) parallax view and a second 2D parallax view of a parallax frame for a three-dimensional (3D) display, the parallax frame corresponding to a timepoint of the media asset;
• and
• the first 2D parallax view corresponds to a first perspective of the scene at the timepoint and the second 2D parallax view corresponds to a second perspective of the scene at the timepoint;
• based at least in part on determining that a size and a location of a first region within the first 2D parallax view corresponds to a size and a location of a second region within the second 2D parallax view, select the first region and the second region for transmission to a first display module of the 3D display, wherein the first region corresponds to the first perspective and the second region corresponds to the second perspective;
• based at least in part on determining that a size and a location of a third region within the first 2D parallax view corresponds to a size and a location of a fourth region within the second 2D parallax view, select the third region and the fourth region for transmission to a second display module of the 3D display, wherein the third region corresponds to the first perspective and the fourth region corresponds to the second perspective;
• transmit, for display by way of the first display module, first encoded data indicative of the first region and the second region;
• and
• transmit, for display by way of the second display module, second encoded data indicative of the third region and the fourth region.
