Abstract

Provided is a magnetic device comprising magnetic particles held in a matrix. The magnetic particles form visual pixels which rotate by means of an external field, changing the appearance of the device. The present invention provides a robust platform for a dynamic surface which can change its appearance under the influence of external stimuli. The platform provides a combination of mechanical and magnetic components: an external field (e.g., magnetic, electric) is used to rotate a plurality of magnetic particles held within a structure to make the surface appearance, of a collection of a plurality of magnetic particles, change. In one embodiment, when the external magnetic field is removed the appearance of the surface is maintained.
