Normalized brightness control for user perception of visual media

A display device comprising:

• one or more computer processors;
• and
• one or more computer-readable mediums storing instructions that, when executed by the one or more computer processors, causes the display device to perform operations comprising:
• accessing, by a computing device, visual content including a plurality of layers;
• evaluating the visual content to determine at least one parameter associated with the visual content;
• determining a desired brightness level for displaying the visual content;
• determining adjustment of display parameters of the plurality of layers to achieve the desired brightness level for displaying adjusted visual content, the determining being based on the at least one parameter associated with the visual content;
• adjusting the display parameters of the plurality of layers from a initial display state to a target display state over a period of time;
• and
• causing presentation of the adjusted visual content on the computing device from the initial display state to the target display state over the period of time.

A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing instructions that, when executed by one or more computer processors of a display device, causes the display device to perform operations comprising:

• accessing, by a computing device, visual content including a plurality of layers;
• evaluating the visual content to determine at least one parameter associated with the visual content;
• determining a desired brightness level for displaying the visual content;
• determining adjustment of display parameters of the plurality of layers to achieve the desired brightness level for displaying adjusted visual content, the determining being based on the at least one parameter associated with the visual content;
• adjusting the display parameters of the plurality of layers from a initial display state to a target display state over a period of time;
• and
• causing presentation of the adjusted visual content on the computing device from the initial display state to the target display state over the period of time.
