Location-based media content aggregation and map-based access

A system comprising:

• one or more processors;
• and
• memory having stored thereon instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, configure the system to perform operations comprising:
• at a server system of a social media platform, automatically compiling multiple location-based galleries from social media items that were submitted by users to the social media platform and that have respective geotag data, the compiling comprising identifying, for each gallery, a respective set of social media items that each satisfies predefined location matching criteria for the respective geotag data relative to a respective anchor location of that gallery;
• causing display on a user device of a map-based graphical user interface (GUI) for the social media platform, the map-based GUI comprising an interactive map of a geographic area;
• causing display on the interactive map of a plurality of gallery icons, each gallery icon representing a respective one of the multiple location-based galleries and being displayed at a respective location on the interactive map corresponding to the anchor location of the respective location-based gallery;
• receiving user input selecting one of the plurality of gallery icons;
• and
• responsive to the user input, enabling user access to the respective set of social media items of the location-based gallery represented by the selected gallery icon.

A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium having stored thereon instructions for causing a machine, when executing the instructions, to perform operations comprising:

• at a server system of a social media platform, automatically compiling multiple location-based galleries from social media items that were submitted by users to the social media platform and that have respective geotag data, the compiling comprising identifying, for each gallery, a respective set of social media items that each satisfies predefined location matching criteria for the respective geotag data relative to a respective anchor location of that gallery;
• causing display on a user device of a map-based graphical user interface (GUI) for the social media platform, the map-based GUI comprising an interactive map of a geographic area;
• causing display on the interactive map of a plurality of gallery icons, each gallery icon representing a respective one of the multiple location-based galleries and being displayed at a respective location on the interactive map corresponding to the anchor location of the respective location-based gallery;
• receiving user input selecting one of the plurality of gallery icons;
• and
• responsive to the user input, enabling user access to the respective set of social media items of the location-based gallery represented by the selected gallery icon.
