A system for the direct reduction of iron includes a pre-reducing furnace, a main reducing furnace, and a reducing gas heat exchanger. The pre-reducing furnace includes an iron oxide intake for receiving an iron oxide, a reducing gas port for injecting a main top gas from a main reduction furnace for partial reduction of the iron oxide, and a reduced iron discharge for discharging a partially reduced iron product. The main reducing furnace includes a main iron oxide intake for receiving the partially reduced iron product and a main top gas offtake for removing the main top gas resulting from reduction of the partially reduced iron product. The reducing gas heat exchanger is fluidly coupled between the reducing gas port of the pre-reducing furnace and the main top gas offtake of the main reducing furnace for cooling the main top gas prior to injection into the pre-reducing furnace.
