Abstract
The subject invention pertains to compositions and methods for preparing and using recombinant proteins based on the fungal Coprinus comatus Y3 protein to control plant and animal viruses and microbes, and diagnose, prevent and treat cancers. Methods are disclosed using compositions comprising recombinant Y3 proteins to diagnose, prevent and/or treat cancer diseases based on recombinant Y3 protein interaction with glycans expressed on cancer cells.

1-28. (canceled)
A method of detecting cancer cells in a biological sample, the method comprising:
- contacting a biological sample with a composition comprising a Y3 protein conjugated to one or more marker molecules, and
- detecting the presence of the marker molecule in the biological sample.
A method of detecting cancer cells in a subject, the method comprising:
- administering to a subject suspected of carrying cancer cells a composition according to comprising a recombinant Coprinus comatus Y3 protein consisting of amino acid residues 24 to 126 of SEQ ID NO:
- 1 conjugated to one or more marker molecules, and
- detecting the presence of the marker molecule in the subject;
- wherein the signal emitted from the marker molecule is detectable from the surface of the subject.
A method of detecting a microbes and/or viruses in a biological sample, the method comprising:
- contacting a biological sample with a composition comprising a Y3 protein conjugated to one or more marker molecules, and
- detecting the presence of the marker molecule in the biological sample.
